Whilst the
cost of health insurance is incredibly high for some, if you enter into a
policy sooner rather than later, you could find that you are paying low prices
whilst receiving the best treatment. As the health insurance company will also
know your medical history as you get older, you may find that you prices will
never reach the heights of policies that are taken out by people later in life.
Added to the price considerations,
you will find that you have the option for the quickest and bet medical care, without having to rely on the NHS and waiting lists for your care to begin. And at times, not having to wait is critical to both your quality of life and sometimes your final prognosis.
I personally took out health insurance to cover my husband and me and then later added my twin boys onto the policy. As we were in our twenties when we took the policy out we were surprised that the health insurance cost was not hugely expensive (just £90 per month).
This was a very small sum to pay for peace of mind. We were lucky, however, that we were in good health and had a relatively short medical history behind us. When we later added our children to the policy it was fortunate that, aside from being a twin pregnancy,
we had no complications and a simple birth with healthy twins as a result. However, when my parents, who are in their fifties, tried to take out a similar policy, the monthly payment amounts would have almost outweighed their monthly income. Once you are over a certain age there is a greater degree of risk involved in insuring people, thus the cost of health insurance rockets. The best tip is to get your policy at a young age when the cost will be at its lowest.
Whilst you may not be thinking about your health as much in your twenties, you will be grateful, should you ever need it, that you have private health cover. We have recently used the policy to meet with the top surgical op-ophthalmologist consultant in our area to assess one of our sons with his squint. If we had not had our health insurance we would have had to wait three months for our first consultation appointment.
With our cover we could ring for an appointment and were seen within ten days. Time is critical for a lot of medical issues but, as a parent, when you are dealing with your small children you just want them to be seen as quickly as possible. In a time of job uncertainly and a tough economy, it is understandable that many people are classing things such as health insurance as a ‘luxury’ and putting it low on the list of priorities. However, whilst your health is one thing you can’t buy, health insurance, whatever the cost, is certainly something which you should invest in so that you can buy the best treatment and options that are on offer.
